Dr. Ken Alexander, Chiropractor
|
Dr. Ken Alexander has been practicing chiropractic in Victoria, BC at Remedy Wellness Centre since 2016. As a chiropractor he strives to help you achieve balance in your musculoskeletal system so you can live without lower back pain, upper back pain, sciatica or headaches. These are some of the most common things people see chiropractors for, though chiropractic is effective for treatment of many other things too such as knee and ankle pain, shoulder injuries, whiplash, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, TMJ dysfunction and more.
Balancing the mechanical relationships of the musculo-skeletal system is key in achieving lasting results. Dr. Alexander takes an in depth history and physical exam to pinpoint the underlying cause of pain. His approach is very thorough, as you may have noticed by the length of time he dedicates to each individual patient. You are guaranteed to have his undivided attention for the entire appointment and each treatment will be executed with the care and specificity. |
Dr. Alexander uses manual therapy (hands on) techniques such as isolytic release and massage to release holding patterns and reduce muscle guarding. Then, if appropriate, gentle manipulation of the spine, pelvis, other joints, soft tissues and nervous system is applied. Not all manipulations involve "cracking" as you may have assumed. Dr. Alexander's approach is as non-invasive and gentle as possible, while employing a variety of techniques that are clinically proven to be effective.
He also believes in empowering his patients by teaching therapeutic exercises and offering health and lifestyle coaching. This is an important factor to maintaining any progress gained in treatment. By giving you the tools you need to take care of yourself, treatment frequency can be reduced or eliminated, which is the long term goal after all.

What To Expect In Your First Chiropractic Visit
Over the years, I have met many patients who have decided to visit me as their chiropractor for the first time. The majority of the patients that are sitting in my office admit that they have some level of anxiety with the first appointment. A lot of the time, we have anxiety for fear of the unknown. They know, or have heard that the chiropractor will “pop your back,” but what does the appointment entail? Providing you with this information is intended to relieve your anxiety about the first appointment. The last thing in the world I would want is for you to not come into the office because you are worried about the unknown.
The First Visit
The first visit can be broken down into 4 main parts. It is generally the longest appointment you will encounter with me and may last anywhere from 30-60 minutes, depending on the complexity of the case. The first part can be similar to an introduction between us and is formally called history. In the history, we discuss your pain, or discomfort, and talk about when it started, how intense, and any related symptoms that may have started around the same time in your life. Then we dive deeper into your past, talking about old injuries, your lifestyle and any medical conditions that you may have as all of these will play a factor not only in how you started to have this pain, but also how long it may take to recover.
Next up, is known as the physical exam. In this, we will look at your range of motion as well as do some orthopedic testing to determine what structures are involved in your pain. A lot of time we assume its just one simple muscle or joint causing our pain; however, it is usually multifactorial, and there can be a few muscles, joints, nerves, ligaments or tendons contributing to our pain experience. This is the portion of the exam which is not typically going to be uncomfortable or painful, however, later on in the day, you may be in some discomfort due to all the testing done in the area. The pain from the examination is self-limiting and will not last longer than 24-48 hours. This part of the exam is essential to get you back to your excellent, pain-free self, we need to know what’s causing the pain.
After the physical exam, comes the report of findings. Here, we will discuss everything that I have found and discovered from the history and physical exam and provide you with a diagnosis. We will discuss treatment options for your condition and the associated risks, as well as your expected prognosis or response to treatment. You are an active participant in this part of the process. If you are uncomfortable with the proposed treatment plan, or still a bit anxious, we can change and adapt the treatment plan that best suits you and leaves you the most comfortable moving forward.
Finally, the reason you came in! To get better, we start the treatment. Now, this looks a little different from person to person. It may involve stretching, spinal or extremity adjustments, and almost always, rehabilitative exercises. These are not the only tools that a chiropractor can use to help you get better, but these are the most common. By the end of the appointment, you should be feeling better, and hopefully empowered to move even more than before!
We then discuss a plan for follow up treatment, if we feel that is needed. For example, if your reason for seeking treatment is quite simple you may only need one appointment to get back to feeling normal. If the problem has been bothering you for a while, is more severe or is from an old injury, it may take more appointments to resolve it. We can determine this together and come up with a plan that works for you.
If after reading this, you still have some anxiety about that first appointment. Please do not hesitate to email me with your questions at [email protected], or alternatively book a 15-minute free consultation at our clinic with me to ask your questions in person.
